Going to the gym

I have a gym membership at the YMCA and there is a 'Child Watch' area for parents to drop off their kids while they work out.  It is awesome for kids....the toys and play area are amazing.  Originally Luke thought it was pretty cool, although he doesn't like me to leave him.  He always asks if I will come back for him soon and when I say yes he usually does okay letting me leave.  But lately, Luke has cried hysterically when we go to the gym.  The last time we were there he said he wanted to 'weep' (sleep) in the car instead of going in.  He ended up letting me put him in the pack 'n play in the Child Watch (he said he wanted to 'weep' in there) and he laid down and covered himself in blankets.  I figured a few minutes after I left to work out he would want to get out and play, but when I came back to pick him up 45 minutes later he was still in the pack 'n play.  He hadn't even gotten out for snack time.  So....just a few nights ago I was trying to gear Luke up for going to the gym the next morning.  I thought he might respond better if I talked about it a bit ahead of time instead of springing it on him right when he woke up in the morning.  He was ready for bed and we were laying in his bed snuggling.  I told him about going to the gym in the morning....

Luke: I don't want to go to the gym mama.
Me:  Why, Lukey?
Luke:  I cry there.
Me:  Why do you cry there?
Luke: Because I miss my mama.

So sweet.  So I told him not to worry about it and we'd just play it by ear.  He asked me to sing Rock-a-bye Baby to him (which is usually how he falls asleep).  I sang it over and over and over for about 10 minutes.  He was breathing heavy and hadn't moved a muscle for a while so I was sure he was sound asleep, but I decided to sing a few more rounds before sneaking out.  Suddenly Luke said "I don't want to go to the gym."  I thought he'd been sleeping for 10 minutes, but instead he was laying there thinking about going to the gym in the morning, full of anxiety.  So I told him we wouldn't go, and that he should not think about it and just try to sleep.  Poor guy.  I don't know if it is a stage, his age, or just his nature, but he hates to leave his mama.
