Spring Break Adventures
This week is Spring Break for our school district. I never had a spring break week at Rocori growing up, so this is a bit new to me. The good news - I get to have Lukey home with me this week. All 3 kids together for a week! Monday morning was full of activity: we built Legos, played basketball, assembled some wooden airplanes from Grandma Annie, painted the wooden airplanes, went on a golf cart ride, threw rocks and explored down by the public access on Green Lake. Whew, it should be time for bed after all that, right? Nope, it was only 11:45am! It wasn't long after that when I started hearing "There's nothing to do" and "I'm bored" and "Can I just watch a show?" Well, somehow we have made it to Thursday night and the week has gone surprisingly well. Here are some highlights:
1. Ben smoked Meredith with a rock in the head when we were throwing rocks at Green Lake. Mer and I were sitting down by the lake and Ben was 20 feet behind us. He picked up a rock and fired it toward the lake. Meredith's little head got in the way. That cut our time at the lake short. She wasn't hurt too badly, just upset and scared.
2. Meredith was so anxious to eat some fresh blueberries that she thought she could climb into her highchair by herself. She wasn't successful, though, and she pulled the heavy, wooden highchair down right on top of her. She landed on her back on the floor, the high chair smashed into her chin, and she was pinned underneath it. Poor Mer-bear had a rough start to the week.
3. Luke learned to read a book called "The Ear Book." I was reading it to Meredith and Ben and he decided to start reading it because there were a lot of words he knew. With some help and a LOT of practice (he must have read the book 100 times in the last 24 hours), he mastered some challenging words and now can read that book like nothing. He read it to Meredith 5 times before bed tonight. Last night he read it to me a bunch of times. It was neat to be read to versus reading to the kids. What a neat transition we are going through. :) He LOVES to read - and to be read to. His teacher even commented on this at his last conference a few weeks ago. As he learns to read more and more, it will open up a whole new world to him. I'm excited for him! I love books and reading, so it's fun for me to have him share this interest.
4. Luke started to try riding his bike. We realize we are just going to have to make it a non-negotiable for him. I know if we had neighbor kids zipping around on their bikes Luke would be anxious to get out there and learn, but he just doesn't see any other kids biking around here. The few times he's been around boys that are biking, he's been anxious to try it out. We are hoping to have him up and running (biking, I should say) by the beginning of the summer. I know I can't push all three kids in the triple jogger stroller this summer (or if I can, it won't be far)...they are just getting too big! A combined 125 lbs (not to mention the weight of the stroller and the gravel road and the hills)! So if Lukey can hop on a bike when we go on our adventures, it will open up a lot of options for us this summer.
5. On Monday, a very warm and sunny day, we put on latex gloves, tied a big trash bag to the triple jogger stroller, and headed toward the lake to pick up trash. It was mind boggling all the trash we collected on the short jaunt from our house down to the lake road and back. We had over 35 plastic water bottles and a large, outdoor trash bag FULL of garbage. We probably looked a little odd, with our latex gloves on and our big trash bag tied to a triple jogger stroller. It feels good to keep our road clean and I have to say, it is always one of our FAVORITE adventures.
6. We went to Spicer Playground/Park on Tuesday afternoon. I was impressed to see Luke handling the monkey bars and sliding down a fire pole. ? When did that happen? Last summer he couldn't do those things. He informed me it's easy, he does it at school. I was proud of Benny, who bravely tackled new things, faced any fears, and learned to go down the fire pole and hang from the monkey bars too. Meredith (who loves to say "no mama" to everything) said "no, mama. no, mama. no, mama" over and over again when I put her in my lap to go down a slide. But she loved it and wanted to go again and again (she kept signing "more" with her fingers), all the while smiling and saying "no, mama." Unfortunately I left my phone in the car, which means my camera was in the car, too.
7.) We had a play date at Luke's friend Silas' house. The Maciks and Davis' were there too. There were a ton of boys, as usual, and little Meredith was right in the mix. She loved the old dog, Otis. They live on Long Lake and have a beautiful, gigantic yard. Liam found all sorts of treasures down by the lake, including a shot gun shell, a small bone (about 5 inches long and a half inch thick. Odd). There were tons of geese in the yard and so Luke and Liam deduced that the shot gun shell came from someone trying to shoot a goose, the bone was the goose's femur bone, and all the goose poop was from the goose being scared when shot. Ha! For having just 3 clues (shot gun shell, bone, goose poop), I think they came up with a likely scenario.
And here are a few more pictures of the week.
