Chubby Cheeks

Luke tends to pick pick pick on Ben.  We don't quite know why.  He seems to have all this stored up energy (maybe from long days at school) and he starts out playing/playful but he won't stop when Ben is just "done" with him. It causes a ton of fighting and yelling and screaming and crying between the two. So tonight as I was lying in bed with Luke (Benny was sleeping next to us) I said to Luke:

MOM:
Look at Benny.  Look at that guy!  He's just so cute!  He's such a nice boy.  You sometimes pick on him, but he is so nice to you.  He is always thinking of you and asking when we can go get you from school.  If he paints or colors something cool during the day, or creates a new Lego, he can't wait to show you and he usually brings it with him in the car so he can show you the minute you get into the car after school.  He really loves you.  So just really try to be kind to him.  

LUKE responds:
But his cheeks are so chubby.

So I was thinking "Umm, his cheeks are chubby.  Is Luke annoyed with that?  Does he think he's too chubby and he's embarrassed by that?"  

MOM:
But he's not chubby really.  He does have the cutest face.  What do you mean?  

LUKE:
His cheeks are just so chubby and his face....I just want to tackle him and tickle him...

MOM:
Oh, so you just can't take how cute and chubby his little face is and it makes you want to just grab him and feel his chubby cheeks and maybe smooch him?

LUKE:
Yeah, but he never wants me to.  

So I'm not saying that Luke's picking on Ben is ALWAYS excusable, but it certainly makes me feel a little less annoyed with all the picking when I know it may be motivated by Ben's sweet cheeks!

I told Luke about how my sister, Shari, always pinned me down on my back and kissed my cheeks when we were growing up. She just loved them and I wouldn't let her kiss them, so she tackled me and pinned my arms down and kissed my chubby cheeks.  Her and I still laugh about it today.  Most people say Benny is "all Hannig" but maybe he has his mom's childhood chubby cheeks.  :)

Milestones

All three of my little babes are meeting milestones like crazy this summer.  Let's start with the oldest of the crew - Mr. Luke Ervin: Milestones of note for LUKE : 1. Biking (previously mentioned in a blog post) 2. Swimming without a lifejacket, in the deep end.  Diving, cannon-balling, sommer-saulting, 360'ing off the diving board, and more.  He is amazing!  Just a month ago he wouldn't jump in the shallow end of the pool and get his face wet.  We are extremely amazed at and proud of him.  The picture below is from the auqatic center in Willmar...since the time of this picture he has completely stopped needing a life jacket but I wanted to add this picture b/c it's so cool. 3.  Teeball'ing as a switch hitter; catching a baseball like never before.  One day he hits right handed, the next left.  What will he be???  We've determined he will just be a switch hitter!  We are so proud of him for playing and improving and enjoying this game on his

What a year....2020

 My posts these days are few and far between.  Maybe it's because life is busy.  Or because I'm working more.  Or because, as always, I find it hard to keep up with all the moments that I want to etch in my memory and so I get overwhelmed trying to document them here.  Or maybe, just maybe, it could have something to do with 2020 being an absolutely wild and unprecedented year!  Despite it all, we are thriving, still smiling, still laughing, still fighting (I guess a lack of fighting would be cause for concern among 3 kids, right?), and we are definitely still counting our blessings.  My friend Julie and I say multiple times a day "Jesus take the wheel."  :)   Spring 2020 quarantine couldn't have been more awesome.  The weather was gorgeous, the kids were thrilled to be home and playing outside, and we spent almost everyday clearing out our woods, burning (my favorite past time, as many people know), and golfing in our yard and at the course.  Ben spent hours on t
