So Ben turned ONE
I'm a bit behind on blogging about the key dates around here. Ben had is very first birthday (his golden birthday) on May 1st and I'm just sitting down to recap now. Maybe it's because there is not much to recap. Like Luke's first birthday, Ben had no clue what was going on. When we sang Happy Birthday to him he did actually put his head in my chest/shoulder like he was embarrassed. But other than that, it was a standard first birthday - give me the cake with chocolate frosting NOW before I starve to death (and if you've seen Benny, it's clear he is not quite starving to death). Grandma and Grandpa Hannig were here and brought a cute Puma outfit, and Grandma and Grandpa Dold came later in the week with a drum set (which Luke claimed as his own) and a battery operated walking/barking puppy - a HUGE hit with Ben. (Luke also tried to claim this toy, saying that he would share with Benny every so often).
It is as though Ben knew he turned one, because as of May 1st his walking and talking and understanding and interaction improved by leaps and bounds. I think now that he is walking, his brother also sees him as more of a playmate and less of a "nuisance who he has to share things with." Ben loves to be outside and insists on sitting on the big wheel or trike and having us push him around the driveway constantly. Our backs our sore from bending over to push him up and down the driveway, but if we stop he begs for more. Once off the big wheel, he loves to carry a stick or shovel or golf club around at all times, poking around at things with it. He has to hold it (usually a golf club) in the car seat, too. He usually gets a little out of control and knocks Luke with it a time or two until Luke is fed up and grabs it, to which Ben lets Luke hear about it with his screams. In the meantime, I'm driving peacefully down the road noticing the butterflies and flowers. :)
Happy birthday, Benny. To celebrate we have your one-year immunizations this Thursday. I bet you can't wait. It's going to be better than cake with chocolate frosting!
