Luke's Heart

Luke is very sentimental. He was devastated a few weeks ago for the Carolina Panthers losing the Super Bowl...Just devastated for Cam Newton. The Broncos had won many Super Bowls. Carolina hadn't. Payton Manning had won a superbowl.  Cam Newton hadn't.  He was close to tears.  He gets attached to things easily and hurts deeply for people. (Like his momma).

Me: Luke, you know what one of the many things I love about you is?  You are sentimental and compassionate.

I went on to explain what those words meant. I explained that he cares deeply about things and people, and so when people are happy, he is happy, but when people are sad, he is sad. We talked about what it means to be sentimental.  Luke won't throw anything away. Everything has an emotional and special story attached to it.

Luke: Kind of like how I am with Eddy ?

Eddy his Luke's betta fish (well it is actually Meredith's, but Luke has become sentimentally attached to Eddy and so it has become his...).

Me:  Yes, remember the first time we had to leave Eddy for a night?  That was rough.  And you're also sentimental about things like your snow globe ornament that you got for your second Christmas that you carry around with you daily.  Or like your old brown shoes from Kindergarten that you can't part with even though they are full of holes.  They have so many memories attached to them.  I'm like that.  And you know who else is?  Grandpa Ernie...he's pretty sentimental...and definitely compassionate.

Luke:  Really, Grandpa Ernie is?  (pause as he thinks).  When you and dad were on your trip, I told grandpa I wanted an apple to get my loose tooth to come out. And he went right to the grocery store and bought me one.  And then he brought me THREE more last night when he came...and he got the red ones that I like.

Me:  Yes he did. Because THAT is who your grandpa Ernie is and what he does.  That is just thoughtfulness, caring and love.  A little different than sentimental - but they are all similar qualities that are a blessing to have.

Our conversation carried on in this manner for a while.  And so he was hurting for Cam Newton. A sweet 6 year old,

FAST FORWARD:  I wrote the above story a few weeks ago, but hadn't gotten around to finishing and posting it.  I was inspired to do it tonight because sweet, sentimental Luke asked if he could keep his lotion bottle when it was empty.

Luke: The new bottle is different and I'm just not used to it yet.  I just want to keep this one.

Ok sweet, sentimental Luke.  You can keep your empty Vanicream lotion bottle.  It can sit right next to Eddy, the snow globe, and your many other memory-filled keepsakes.  I love you and your precious heart!

Old bottle...almost empty...

Can you tell this says "Luke" on it?
Dented, no hanger to hang it on the tree with

This thing looks like it's been to Mars and back
We will never throw this away.  Never.

Luke's note to Joe and Hannah with instructions to keep Eddy alive.  He took a few pictures of Eddy on my phone before we left, so that he would have Eddy "with us" for the weekend.  And throughout the weekend he had me check in with Hannah to make sure they weren't forgetting to feed Eddy.
