Aunt Hannah got Meredith a pair of leggings for her 3rd birthday last July and they have kitties on them. They are her favorites. She rarely takes them off. About a month ago, she fell on the tar and ripped a big hole in one of the knees. I immediately set them aside for Grandma Marcy to sew up. She can work magic. :) This was in early March, and when I told Grandma I would be sending the Kitty pants her way for some mending, Grandma mentioned that because the pants are so thin, a patch might be uncomfortable for Meredith and it might not look good. That was the last we talked. Then Paul and I went to Acapulco over our 10 year anniversay. The kids stayed with Grandma and Grandpa Dold that weekend. Well, we came home and got back into the swing of life and a few days later I received an email from Grandma Marcy asking if I'd talked to Meredith about the Kitty pants - the ones that she had turned into shorts. EEK! Grandma had felt that they could not be salvaged as pants and so she cut them off and hemmed them up as shorts. I immediately giggled and thought, "Oh boy, I wonder how that went over with Meredith." Later that morning Meredith and I were checking out a few books at the library. Meredith was sitting up on the counter and I remembered Grandma Marcy's email.
Me:
Meredith, I heard Grandma Marcy cut the legs off of your Kitty pants and made them into shorts.
Meredith (looking away from me, stone cold, with a slightly irritated tone):
Yeah. She did.
That's it. Silence. Inside, I laughed so hard! I tried to explain Grandma's necessity as well as the thought process that led her to make the heinous decision that she had to make. Meredith kept staring straight ahead, no eye contact, no words. Bahahaha! Well, things are all better now because the warm weather has arrived and guess what? The kitty pants - oops, I mean shorts - have a new life and she came out after a bath dressed in them. (Picture below). Also, below is the email from Grandma Marcy.
Grandma's email:
I’m not sure where the laundry ladies (Andrea and Meri) put the little kitty pants I did for Meri, but I wanted to let you know that I did not mend them….too bad. I don’t think Meri was too happy with me (when she’s not pleased, she just looks at me and doesn’t comment) but I just cut them off and told her they would be a long pair of shorts – I called them exercise shorts. I told her if she did not like them at that length, we could shorten for summer shorts. We’ll see how she reacts. Maybe you’ll have to put on some longer shorts sometime when you exercise in the basement and see if she puts them on. I don’t know where they ended up, because I threw them into the laundry. My sewing machine does not hem knits nicely, (sergers are best for that), so if she doesn’t like, I guess they’ll have to be garbage.
