We have a garden, folks.
We moved into our Spicer home in late July of 2011, right after Benny was born. There was a garden box out back. That first summer we happened to benefit from the prior owner's planting, and one head of lettuce randomly popped up among the weeds. In 2012, Lukey and me (Luke was just 3) championed the garden, planting tomatoes and green beans and basil and carrots, and even cantaloupe! The cantaloupe looked great, but didn't end up tasting so good. Luke and I both had a blast seeing the beans and tomatoes grow. It was so satisfying. We couldn't eat the tomatoes fast enough - we had SO many. In 2013, we took the summer off, as I was 9 months pregnant with little Meredith and didn't have the energy to plant a garden.
Well, folks, it is 2014 now, and we have a 5 year old Lukey (farmer Luke), and a 3 year old Benny (farmer Ben), and a 10 month old Meredith (farmer Meri, who loves to eat dirt). We just planted our garden, and we had SO MUCH FUN! Benny loved the prep work....putting up the deer fencing (at 7:30am one morning), hoeing and weeding and digging and smoothing. Lukey loved the planting, taking it very seriously - reading the directions for each veggie, digging rows, putting in the seeds, covering the seeds, and labeling the stakes with each vegetable's name. We started our planting with a few classics - green beans, tomatoes (grape, pear, and big boy tomatoes) and carrots. Then we got a little 'alternative' (trying some new things for us) and added watermelon, cauliflower, red peppers, basil, potatoes, pumpkins, and spinach. Our little garden box probably cannot handle all the veggies we jammed in there. Yikes! They may strangle each other! We even expanded the garden by removing the rock along the side of the house, ripping out the plastic underneath, and planting some spinach there. I'm not thinking it will grow there this year because the dirt was clay, versus black dirt...but it will be a learning experience. Next year we can bring in some black dirt if necessary. I can't wait to report back to let everyone know how our crops look throughout the summer!
Farmer Luke did not want to be in any pictures, but below is farmer Ben. We like to call him 'worker Ben.' He is a WORKER!
